This bust of Antinous is a plaster copy of an original marble sculpture located in the Pio Clementino collection of The Vatican Museums (Inv. 251). It is presented next to the deified full figure Baschai Antinous which was made posthumously.
The portrait features Antinous' charactaristic fleshy, youthful beauty with particularly 'severe' corkscrew curls, a common style of his idealized likeness. The peculiar features of this bust have led many to propose it as a 'true' portrait of Antinous, though this has been debated on the ground that the treatment of the hair better corresponds to divinity than a human being. Many versions of this bust still remain (see Vatican No.636, Vienna Kunsthistorisches No.1.91 and Antiken Sammlung No.60/SK364).
The back is not faithful to that on the original marble bust due to its position when digitizing.
